FREE–Record Your Elder Interview Guide KS2
Ask a question. Listen to a memory. Become a historian.
History is not only found in books. It lives in people's journeys, traditions and everyday experiences. This free interview guide invites children aged 7–11 to sit with an elder and record stories worth carrying forward.
Created to complement learning about Caribbean migration and the Windrush generation, the guide is for every child, whatever their background. An elder can be a grandparent, neighbour, family friend, trusted relative or member of a faith community.
READY TO USE AT HOME OR SCHOOL:
At home: Explore childhood, journeys, food, music, language, traditions and advice the elder would like younger generations to remember. Questions about coming to Britain can be used where relevant to the person's experience.
At school: Use the structured interview for classroom, homework or family learning. Pupils practise listening, asking questions and recording lived experience, with links to History, literacy, PSHE, RE and cultural understanding.
